How this tool works

What it does

Background Remover detects the subject with an in-browser AI model and removes, colours, or blurs the background.

Background modes

Transparent PNG, solid colour, or blurred original (with a blur slider).

The model

The AI model files download on first use from the model hub (Hugging Face) and are cached by your browser when possible; if the cache is cleared or blocked they may download again. The download size varies by browser and model package.

Privacy & metadata

In-browser only; nothing is uploaded. Browser canvas export strips EXIF, GPS, and most other source metadata.

Background Remover in your browser

Background Remover removes the background from a photo in your browser using the ormbg segmentation model running through Transformers.js — the image is never uploaded to a server. It detects the main subject, cuts it out, and lets you keep the background transparent, fill a solid colour, or blur the original.

Choose what happens to the background: Transparent (PNG with a clear background), Solid colour, or Blur original (with an adjustable blur). The AI model files download on first use from the model hub (Hugging Face) and are cached by your browser when possible; if the cache is cleared or blocked they may download again. The download size varies by browser and model package.

Background Remover shows the output dimensions, the chosen background, the AI model used, and the file size in the result panel. Browser canvas export strips EXIF, GPS, and most other source metadata. Animated GIFs are processed as a single still frame; animation is not preserved.

How to use Background Remover

  1. Upload your photo into Background Remover — click, press Enter, or drag it in.
  2. On first use, wait while Background Remover downloads the AI model files (they are cached by your browser afterwards when possible).
  3. Choose the background in Background Remover: transparent, a solid colour, or a blurred original (set the blur strength if you pick blur).
  4. Click Process to run Background Remover’s in-browser AI, review the cutout, then download the PNG.

Why use Background Remover

Any-device cutouts

When to choose Background Remover

This tool is for cutting the background out of an image so the subject sits on transparency.

Worked example: A product shot needs to drop onto a clean white catalogue page. Remove the cluttered background so just the product remains, ready to place anywhere.

Background Remover isolates the subject; Remove Background and BG Remover are the same tool under different names.

  • Clear separation between subject and background gives the cleanest cut.
  • Save as PNG to keep the transparency around the subject.

What format keeps the transparent background?

PNG (or WebP) preserves transparency; saving as JPEG fills the cleared area with a solid colour instead.

Does it work on busy backgrounds?

Subjects that stand out clearly cut best; very busy or low-contrast backgrounds can leave edges that need a touch-up.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server by Background Remover?

No. Background Remover runs the AI model in your browser and the photo is never sent to imgtoolsbase or any server. On first use, the AI model downloads once from the model hub (Hugging Face) and is then cached by your browser; your image is still processed locally and never uploaded.

Is the background removal in Background Remover really AI?

Yes. Background Remover runs the ormbg segmentation model in your browser through Transformers.js to detect the subject. It is not a server service and your photo is not uploaded.

Does Background Remover work offline after the model is cached?

Often, yes. After Background Remover downloads the model once, it is cached by your browser and can run without re-downloading. If the cache is cleared or blocked, the files download again, so offline use is not guaranteed.

Why is the first run of Background Remover slow, and how accurate is it?

The first run downloads the model files, which takes a moment; later runs are faster. Accuracy is good for clear subjects but soft hair, fine edges, and busy backgrounds can be imperfect — clean up edges in the Background Eraser if needed.
