How this tool works

What it does

Remove Background detects the subject with an in-browser AI model and removes, colours, or blurs the background.

Background modes

Transparent PNG, solid colour, or blurred original (with a blur slider).

The model

The AI model files download on first use from the model hub (Hugging Face) and are cached by your browser when possible; if the cache is cleared or blocked they may download again. The download size varies by browser and model package.

Privacy & metadata

In-browser only; nothing is uploaded. Browser canvas export strips EXIF, GPS, and most other source metadata.

Remove Background in your browser

Remove Background cuts the background out of a photo entirely in your browser with an in-browser AI model — nothing is uploaded. Keep the subject on a transparent background, swap in a solid colour, or blur the original behind it.

Choose what happens to the background: Transparent (PNG with a clear background), Solid colour, or Blur original (with an adjustable blur). The AI model files download on first use from the model hub (Hugging Face) and are cached by your browser when possible; if the cache is cleared or blocked they may download again. The download size varies by browser and model package.

Remove Background shows the output dimensions, the chosen background, the AI model used, and the file size in the result panel. Browser canvas export strips EXIF, GPS, and most other source metadata. Animated GIFs are processed as a single still frame; animation is not preserved.

How to use Remove Background

  1. Upload your photo into Remove Background — click, press Enter, or drag it in.
  2. On first use the in-browser AI model is fetched once and then cached, so later runs start faster.
  3. Leave the background on Transparent to delete it completely, or switch to a solid colour or a blurred original instead.
  4. Click Process, zoom into the cut edges and any hair in the preview to check them, then download the transparent PNG.

Why use Remove Background

Runs in your browser

Remove Background performs the AI segmentation locally; your photo is never uploaded.

Three background modes

Keep it transparent, fill a solid colour, or blur the original behind the subject.

Honest about the model

States clearly that the model downloads on first use from the model hub (Hugging Face) and caches when possible — no false "always offline" promise.

Edge cleanup path

For stray edges, the Background Eraser lets you brush the cutout by hand.

Common uses for Remove Background

Product photos

Drop the background so a product sits on transparent or white for a store listing.

Profile and avatars

Cut yourself out of a busy photo for an avatar or badge.

Design assets

Get a transparent PNG subject to drop into a poster, slide, or collage.

Any-device cutouts

Remove backgrounds from a phone, tablet, or computer browser with the photo staying local.

When to choose Remove Background

This tool is for removing a distracting background to reuse a subject across different designs.

Worked example: A logo photographed on a desk needs to appear on several coloured banners. Remove the desk so the logo can sit on any background you choose.

Remove Background performs the same isolation as Background Remover and BG Remover; pick whichever name you searched for.

  • Once the background is gone, the subject can be placed on any colour or image.
  • Keep a transparent PNG master so you never have to re-cut it.

Can I put a new background in after removing the old one?

Yes — once the subject is on transparency you can layer it over any colour or image in your editor.

Does removing the background change the subject's quality?

The subject's pixels are preserved; only the surrounding background is cleared away.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server by Remove Background?

No. Remove Background runs the AI segmentation in your browser; the photo is never uploaded. On first use, the AI model downloads once from the model hub (Hugging Face) and is then cached by your browser; your image is still processed locally and never uploaded.

Is the background removal in Remove Background really AI?

Yes. Remove Background runs the ormbg segmentation model in your browser through Transformers.js to detect the subject. It is not a server service and your photo is not uploaded.

Can Remove Background blur or colour the background instead of removing it?

Yes. Pick Solid colour to fill the background, or Blur original to keep a softened version of the photo behind the subject. Transparent gives a clear PNG background.

Does Remove Background work offline after the model is cached?

Often, yes. After Remove Background downloads the model once, it is cached by your browser and can run without re-downloading. If the cache is cleared or blocked, the files download again, so offline use is not guaranteed.
