How this tool works

What it does

Blur Background detects the subject with an in-browser AI model and blurs the background behind it.

Blur strength

One slider (0–100 px); the subject stays sharp.

The model

The AI model files download on first use and are cached by your browser when possible; if the cache is cleared or blocked they may download again. The download size varies by browser and model package.

Privacy & metadata

In-browser only; nothing is uploaded. Browser canvas export strips EXIF, GPS, and most other source metadata.

Blur Background in your browser

Blur Background keeps your subject sharp and blurs the background of a photo in your browser using an in-browser AI model — nothing is uploaded. It detects the subject, then applies an adjustable blur to everything behind it for a portrait-style look.

Set the blur strength to control how soft the background becomes. The AI model files download on first use and are cached by your browser when possible; if the cache is cleared or blocked they may download again. The download size varies by browser and model package.

Blur Background shows the output dimensions, the blur used, the AI model, and the file size in the result panel. Browser canvas export strips EXIF, GPS, and most other source metadata. Animated GIFs are processed as a single still frame; animation is not preserved.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to a server by Blur Background?

No. Blur Background runs the AI segmentation and the blur in your browser; the photo is never uploaded.

Can Blur Background change the blur strength?

Yes. The blur strength slider (0–100 px) controls how soft the background becomes; the subject stays sharp.

Does Blur Background work offline after the model is cached?

Often, yes — after Blur Background downloads the model once, it is cached by your browser. If the cache is cleared or blocked, the files download again, so offline use is not guaranteed.

Why are the subject edges in Blur Background not perfect?

The AI segments the subject automatically; soft hair and fine edges can be imperfect. For hand cleanup, remove the background in the Background Eraser and place the subject on your own blurred image.
